Richard M. (“Dick”) Carroll passed away on May 12, 2024, at the age of 94. He was born on January 8,1930 to Harry and Rosella (Willegala) Carroll in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. He is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Sharon (McEvoy) Carroll; children Therese (Lucio) Caruso, Kathleen (Chris) Cohenour, Michael (Jana) Carroll, John (Donna) Carroll, Mary (Jeff) Barrie, Stephen (Eileen) Carroll, Connie (David) Nell, 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Dick graduated from St. Patrick High School in Kankakee, Illinois where he was active in sports and many other school activities. He earned both BS and MS degrees from Purdue University. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force and served tours of active duty during both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, retiring as a Colonel. He retired from Allison Gas Turbine Division of General Motors (Plants 5 and 8) as Superintendent of Quality Engineering.
Dick was a long-time member of St. Christopher Catholic Church where he served in a number of different ministries. He was also a proud member of the Holy Family Council of the Knights of Columbus, Purdue Alumni Association, John Purdue Club, the Speedway Lion’s Club, MOAA (former Indianapolis Chapter President), American Legion Post 500, AFA, ROA and SME. A lifelong sports fan, he was an ardent supporter of the Purdue Boilermakers and the Green Bay Packers. He coached Little League football and baseball and loved following his children and grandchildren in their athletic pursuits. He enjoyed family events, golfing, reading and travel. Sharon and Dick visited all 7 continents and all 50 States.
Visitation will be held on Sunday May 19, 2024, at Flanner & Buchanan Mortuary in Speedway from 3-7PM with the rosary at 6:30PM. Funeral services will be held at St. Christopher Catholic Church, Speedway, at 11AM on Monday, May 20, 2024, preceded by visitation at the church at 10AM. Burial with Military Honors will take place at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to St. Christopher Church for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
