Richard Donald Hamilton, 85, of Indianapolis, Indiana has passed away on October 14, 2018. Richard was born in Indianapolis on February 17, 1933. He was the son of Claude and Bessie (McClung) Hamilton. He was one of four sons. Claude “Buddy” and Edwin Hamilton have sadly passed on several years ago. Richard is survived by his brother Jack (Patty) Hamilton who live in Ohio.
Richard served his country in the Navy during the Korean War. He was a radioman 3rd class on the USS Prairie. He spoke often of his time in the Navy. He enjoyed seeing Japan and the Philippines during his time on the ship.
After leaving the Navy, Richard became a member of the Indiana State Police, first as a radioman and then as a State Trooper. He retired in 1976 after twenty years of service and became Chief of Police in Hartford City, Indiana.
Richard worked several security positions throughout his remaining working years before finally retiring in the late 90’s.
Richard loved music of all kinds and was a great dancer. He had a quick wit and didn’t miss the opportunity to make a pun. He was a voracious reader. He was known to read 5 or 6 books at the same time. The staff at the library knew him by name.
Richard is survived by his three children; David (Susie) Hamilton, Stacy (James) Nelson and Jay (Tina) Hamilton.
Also surviving are six grandchildren, Megan (Alex) Clayton, Corey Mills, Nikolas Hamilton, Sebastian Hamilton, Jillian Nelson and Jay (Nicole) Nelson.
He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Indianapolis 7929 N. Michigan Rd Indianapolis, IN 46268
