Ralph Bernard Smith, 93, of Indianapolis Indiana, passed away on Thursday, February 23, 2023. He was born on January 28, 1930, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to parents Rheuby “Rex” and Mildred (Peckinpaugh) Smith.
He was a 1947 graduate of Warren Central High School, and at the time of his death, Mr. Smith was the oldest living Warren Grad! In school, Ralph played basketball, football, baseball and sang in the WC Boys Quartet, which was an Acapella group and also with the Madrigals. Mr. Smith then continued his education as a Butler Bulldog, where he played basketball and was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity and the Phi Epsilon Kappa Fraternity. Ralph received his Bachelor’s in Education and Coaching, and then he became a proud Indiana Hoosier where he earned his Master’s degree in administration during summer session.
Ralph later married the love of his life, Carole (Budack) Smith and this past October they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary together! Ralph is survived by his loving wife, Carole Smith; children: Jeffrey R. Smith, Candy Handy and Laurie (Keith) Miller; grandchildren: Cassidy Handy, Alex (Shelby) Handy, Jake (Taylor) Miller and Rylee Miller; and one great-grandchild, Halston Handy. All of Papaw’s Grand’s brought great delight to his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rheuby R. “Rex” and Mildred Smith, and brother, Ray Smith and his in-laws Victor and Mary Budack.
Visitation for Ralph will be from 1-3pm on Thursday, March 2, 2023, at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East – 10722 E. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46229, with a funeral service immediately following at 3pm. Burial will take place at Washington Park East Cemetery.
