Phyllis Mae (Rumple) Black, 91, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 8, 2022 surrounded by her loving children and daughter-in-law. Phyllis was born in Ellettsville, Indiana on March 27,1930 to the late Alva O. and Hertha B. (Phillips) Rumple. She married the love of her life, the late Joseph C Black Jr., on August 8, 1948 in Indianapolis, Indiana. They were both long time and very active members of West Morris St. Free Methodist Church.
Phyllis was a remarkable woman who was loved by everyone she met. She so much enjoyed being with her family, playing scrabble or Rummikub as well as going out to dinner occasionally for a fine steak. As a teacher in Indianapolis for over 32 years, she relished being around people and giving of herself to others in a very compassionate and caring way. She enjoyed cooking and being in the kitchen, especially when surrounded by family. She loved watching Butler basketball and the Indianapolis Colts.
Along with her parents and husband, Phyllis is preceded in death by her siblings Lois Gentry, Gayle Foster, Rose Rumple, Alva Rumple, Norman Rumple, and Marvin Rumple.
Phyllis is survived by her loving children Jo Bean of Clearwater, Fl. and Dr. Bradley (Tamara) Black of Floyd’s Knobs, IN.; grandchildren Dr. Jessica (Dr. Kristopher) Pugh and B.J. (Kelly) Black; great-grandchildren Joey Black, Emma Pugh, Hadley Pugh, Anna Black, Callum Pugh, Molly Black, Boden Pugh, and Tommy Black; brother Stan Rumple; and several nieces, nephews, extended family and special friends.
Funeral services will begin at 12:00 noon Friday, January 14 at Flanner Buchanan – Speedway at 2950 N. High School Rd in Indianapolis. There will be a short visitation beginning at 10 a.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory be made to Hosparus Health of Southern Indiana, 502 Hausfeldt Lane, New Albany, IN 47150.
