In Loving Memory: Philip Murray Steele

Carmel, Indiana – Philip Murray Steele, 79, passed away on March 21, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Philip was born in Indianapolis, IN, to Murray Leighman and Evelyn Grace (Dronberger) Steele on February 20, 1945.

Philip was a beacon of leadership and talent from a young age. He graduated from Manual High School in 1963, where he excelled academically as a distinguished leader in student government and an outstanding athlete.

Continuing his education, Philip briefly attended Purdue University.  An unfortunate injury interrupted his opportunity with their basketball program and redirected him to Indiana University - Bloomington where he graduated from the School of Business. Philip’s passion for sports was evident throughout his life and he was an avid sports fan of both universities except when his beloved Hoosiers played the Boilermakers.

Throughout his professional career, Philip found fulfillment as a sales executive.  His work experience started in high school as a sales representative of his father’s company National Household Distributors.  Years later, he became an accomplished leader with the Publishing and Sales division of Ameritech where his leadership qualities were recognized multiple years as the Presidential Sales and Marketing Leader recipient. Philip's peers at Ameritech appreciated his natural leadership abilities, electing him as their CWA President, where he worked to improve the workplace environment for all employees.  Additionally, Philip pursued his passion for the real estate market, acquiring his broker license and making significant contributions to the gentrification of neighborhoods in central Indiana.

Philip, lovingly known as “Pampo” to his grandchildren, found great joy in making laughter filled memories with them.  Philip is survived by his children: Philip Michael Steele (Cynthia), Angela Lee Foutty (Matt), Michelle Lynn Steele, Brendon Steele (Kathryn); his sisters: Jeanne Hollingsworth (Ed), Sandie Schultz (Ray), Vickie Armstrong (Bob), and Judy Linville (Jack); his grandchildren: Story Lynn Shaffer, Emmalyne Michelle Foutty, Luke Andrew Foutty, Evelyn Grace Foutty, Elyse Rose Foutty, Ethan Everett Steele, Colin Andrew Steele, Eleanor Lee Steele, and Eren Levi Steele; and his great-grandchild Aleigha Marie Foutty.

A visitation to honor Philip's life will be held on April 2, 2024, at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East from 12 pm to 2 pm, followed by funeral services at 2 pm.  Philip will be laid to rest at Washington Park East Cemetery immediately following.

Philip Murray Steele will be deeply missed, yet his spirit remains a beacon of light for his family, friends, and community. May he rest in eternal peace, knowing his legacy will inspire future generations.
