Peter E. Swingler, 69, Carmel, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on March 19th, 2024. He was born in Pensacola, Florida on August 21st, 1954. He is remembered as a devoted family man, loving father, and grandfather.
Mr. Swingler was an accomplished mechanical engineer, working for Allison Transmission and Eaton over the span of a nearly 45 year career. During his professional career he held various key engineering positions for numerous market leading commercial vehicle products, and was awarded multiple patents for his technical innovations. In addition to his work at Allison and Eaton, he also worked as an engineer in professional motorsports, both in IndyCar and NHRA drag racing, through his own business Swingler Motorsport Engineering. During the 80’s, Mr. Swingler built an expertise in aerodynamics in the early days of ground effects in IndyCar racing. He specialized in designing aerodynamic components, in addition to designing several complete cars in the 1980’s. Beyond his great passion for motorsports and all things technical, he is remembered for his complete dedication to his children as a father. Over the years, he enjoyed spending weekends watching his sons playing hockey and racing go-karts. He also found great joy as a grandfather to Blair. Peter was a lifelong Purdue Boilermakers fan and a passionate Colts fan.
He is survived by his wife Lana Swingler; sons, Andrew, Colin (Elena), and Matthew; grandson Blair Peter; siblings William (Andrea), Christine (William), and Suzanne (Mike); and his dogs Oliver and Trey.
Visitation will be held at Flanner Buchanan - Carmel, 325 E Carmel Dr, Carmel, IN 46032 on Saturday March 23rd from 12:00 – 2:00 pm. Funeral services will be held immediately after the visitation at Flanner Buchanan starting at 2:00 pm with burial on a later date in the Washington Park North Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to IU Health Foundation and / or Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana.
