Peter Kirles 97, of Indianapolis passed away April 08, 2017. He was born in East Lansing, MI. to Peter and Gloria (Gianakina) Kirles. Peter proudly served our country in the U S Army in many capacities from driving tanks in North Africa, followed by a transition to England where he served with the British Army, and finally being attached to The Free French 2nd Armored Division serving as a Liaison Officer where he participated in the Liberation of Paris. In addition to Good Conduct Medal, Pete received The European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with five Bronze Stars and The Croix de Guerre with one Bronze Star.
Peter was a long standing member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and served on The Board of Trustees of AHEPA #232 Retirement Home, Millersville Masonic Lodge #126, and The Indiana Retailers Jewelers Association.
Peter, along with his beloved “bride” Aglaia, founded Kirles Jewelers in 1951 having officially “retired” in 1986, yet he remained active up to this very month. Peter was preceded in death by his wife Aglaia (Angelopolous) Kirles, brother George (Joan), and sisters Agnes (Steve) Fotiades, and Mary (Gus) Betras. Peter is survived by his two sons Peter D. (Cindy) Kirles and George S. (Cynthia) Kirles as well as his six grandchildren; Kristina (Nick) Walden, Peter Christopher (fiancée Courtney), Kaitlin, Gwen, Maggie and Ted Kirles.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday April 11, 2017 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church from 9 – 11 am immediately followed by the funeral service.
Burial: Crown Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to either Holy Trinity or the Ladies Philoptchos Society whose Indianapolis Chapter was started by his mother Gloria and named in his honor.
