Paulina Reneé DeVore passed away peacefully at the age of 43, with her family beside her, on July 10, 2022.
She was born on September 20, 1978; and, at the age of seven weeks was joyfully adopted by Wesley and Florence DeVore. Many people remarked over the years that Paulina looked like her dad, Wes.
She was welcomed by her new grandparents and a large family of aunts, uncles, and cousins who couldn’t wait to meet and hold her. The family would gather for celebrations all through the year; and while the grown-ups would joke and talk, the cousins ran circles around them, playing games and laughing together.
Paulina’s cousin Jenny was the same age; and the two girls became immediate friends, putting their heads together for innocent mischief, showing up in frilly dresses for Sunday school, and walking down the aisle as double flower girls.
As an older child, Paulina took vacations with her extended family, camping and house-boating; and she grew to love the Smoky Mountains. During the long drive there, she and her mother made up stories about the Indian maiden “Fallen Rock,” whose name was posted on signs all along the highway.
Paulina grew up in Irvington across from Pleasant Run Park and eventually attended Howe High School. She graduated from Broad Ripple High School after Howe students were transferred there.
As a young woman, Paulina loved drawing and making art. She was known as a social person and often laughed at herself. She had such a quick sense of humor that friends and acquaintances independently called her a “hoot.”
She enjoyed working in nature as a landscaper, sometimes waitressing. She also did work as an event planner. After hours, Paulina sought the company of pit bulls and knew instinctively how to win their hearts. She adopted three of the dogs over her lifetime.
The family sincerely thanks Jimmy Dahmer and his pit bull “Droopy” for their devoted care of Paulina during her two-year battle with cancer.
