Paul E. Smiley
97, of Westfield, IN, passed away on November 20, 2016. Paul was born on August 19, 1919 in Indianapolis, to Lloyd and Hazel (Fazenbaker) Smiley.
Paul was an agricultural supervisor in Southern Indiana from 1930 to 1941. Paul was drafted into the United States Army and served from 1941 to 1947. He earned the rank of Major, Armored Cavalry and was a veteran of World War II. He served in the 106th Calvary in Normandy, France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He earned the Bronze Star, Four Battle Stars, Presidential Unit Badge, and French and Belgian Fourragere. He served in the U.S. Forces Austria as Chief Agriculture and Forestry Branch Economics Division from 1945 to 1947.
Paul owned and operated Smiley Sawmill and Smiley Buildings from 1949 to 1973. He also owned and operated R & R Smith Co. in Indianapolis from 1976 to 1991.
Paul was active in the American Legion and VFW, as well as Cornerstone Baptist Church.
He is survived by his children, David E. (Donna) Smiley of Lafayette, IN and Lloyd D. (Earlene) Smiley of Westfield, IN; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 74 years, Mary A. Smiley; and a grandson, Matthew David Smiley. Memorial contributions may be made to Cornerstone Baptist Church.
