Paul David Bortlein

Paul David Bortlein, 86, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away November 2, 2019. He was born June 30, 1933 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Louis and Kathleen Bortlein; he was one of two children.

Paul was a 1952 graduate of Sacred Heart Catholic School. After graduation, Paul made the heartful decision to serve his country. He joined the United States Navy on June 26, 1952. During his enlistment, he served over 3 years overseas, earning the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service  Medal, and United Nations Service Medal. He faithfully served his country and was honorably discharged on June 8, 1956. We remain forever grateful for our brave service men and women who dutifully serve our country, past and present. Paul continued serving, only on a more local level when he joined the Indianapolis Fire Department. He served the Indianapolis community for 20 years and 2 days, until his retirement in 1974. He met the love of his life, Elizabeth Rosalee Robey, in 1966 while they were both employed as security for a local store and the rest is history.  It was love at first sight for both, they were married on June 25, 1968 and spent 52 beautiful years watching their family grow. Paul enjoyed motorcycles, going on tours, and fishing. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. His passing leaves an empty space in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to meet him; he was truly one of a kind.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Kathleen; son, David Bortlein; brother, Louis Bortlein. Surviving to cherish his memory are loving wife of 52 years, Rosalee; children, Michael (Ann) Bortlein, Kathy (Bob) Warden; Cindy (Terry) Webb, David (Lisa) Pavey, Tony (Linda) Pavey, Todd (Suzanne) Pavey; lots of loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as a host of extended family members and friends.
