Patricia Lee Daugherty Wells, born Nov. 20, 1948, died Feb. 22 at Hooverwood Living in Indianapolis, in her sleep, age 72.
She’d been there only a few hours, but that was Pat. Patience was not her virtue. However, she had many others: humor, honesty, compassion, kindness, generosity, loyalty, and a loving heart.
Life tested her; she overcame a great deal. Fortitude was also one of her virtues.
She was a wife, a widow, an adoring mother, a sister, a talented saleswoman and a Friend of Bill W. She was a wit, and, as a friend said, a tall glass of water. Life with Pat was never insipid.
Born in Evansville, she graduated from Benjamin Bosse High School. She was active in the Evansville Civic Theater as a young woman, and she kept her flair for drama and comedy intact all her days, joking with her nurses and doctors until the very end. She attended community college in Evansville, where she studied early childhood education. She was a Catholic convert, with a devotion to her friends at Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in Evansville.
She married Donald Wells in 1974, and they had two sons, Bradley and Anthony. Don died in 1995.
Pat’s first career was working with children in day care in Evansville with the Daughters of Charity, and later in Indianapolis with her own day care business. She was an entrepreneur, launching a sales startup in 1989, targeting 86th Street merchants. Her ability to charm clients and work hard always paid off. For 19 years, she was an advertising sales account executive at Indianapolis Monthly magazine; she later worked for Travel Indiana and Executive Portfolio of Fine Living.
She loved popular culture, especially books and movies. She knew more about film than many critics, and she had a keen memory for great moments in cinema. She was fond of football and shared her love of the Colts with her sons. She also loved her faith, saying daily morning prayers for her circle of family and friends. She enjoyed entertaining and was a marvelous hostess. She was devoted to her cats.
She cared about her community and felt that all people deserved to be treated with respect and dignity.
Her survivors include sons, Bradley Vincent (Melissa Janae) of Vancouver, Canada, and Anthony Joseph, of Indianapolis; her sister, Judi Daugherty Johnson (Robert) and her family, all of the Detroit area; and her loyal friends, the Rev. Ted Tempel of Evansville, Ruth and Guy Holladay of Indianapolis, and Andre Lee of Indianapolis.
A celebration of Pat’s life will be held this spring. Arrangements are courtesy of Flanner Buchanan – Broad Ripple. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Fairbanks Recovery Center by clicking HERE and Robin’s Nest of Indy by clicking HERE.
