Patricia Ann Wolford

December 10, 1936 — October 22, 2021

Indianapolis, IN

Patricia Ann (Phillips) Wolford died peacefully on Friday, October 22, 2021, at her home at Forum at the Crossing in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was born on December 10, 1936, in Ten Mile, West Virginia, to the late George Sherman Phillips and Alvertie Lee (Crites) Phillips.

Born and raised in the mountains of West Virginia, Patricia graduated from Shinnston High School in May of 1954. She completed an Associates Degree in Business Administration from the University of Indianapolis. Ever ambitious, she moved up the ranks in the banking industry, earning the title of Vice President of Commercial Mortgage Lending.

In 1952, as a waitress at the Farmerette in rural West Virginia, she gave a beaming smile to Roy Wolford and his friend, the former of whom looked at her and said, “I’m going to marry you someday.” True to his word, Roy and Patricia were married by a Justice of the Peace in 1954, and remained married for 50 years until his passing in July of 2004.

Patricia was brave, generous, and creative. She embraced being a military wife, and was proud to do so — always sad to leave behind friends, but ever the optimist, she looked forward to a new adventure. This bravery came into play in many other areas of her life — from joining Toastmasters to taking up ballroom dancing, Patricia didn’t shy away from a new experience, or a new opportunity to do something fun. She was generous in all things — from making sure you had a full belly to knowing you were loved as you were. And she was creative. Not only was she an excellent cook, but she dabbled in many forms of art, from poetry to painting to piano.

Her loving spirit rippled out to all she knew. Family was central to her — her favorite times were when she could bring her family together under her roof to share a meal — but she touched countless lives outside of blood relatives.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Roy Lee Wolford, daughter Bridget Wolford, and sisters Genevieve Shipman and Ondalea Norris.

Her surviving family members include her son Robert Wolford and his wife Beth, daughter  Terry (Wolford) Atwood and her husband Michael; grandchildren Stephanie (Wolford) King and her husband Paul, Thea Atwood and her spouse James Curtis, Chris Wolford and fiancée Adrienne Grover, and Dylan Atwood; and her great-grandchildren, Calliope and Maxwell. She will also be remembered by her sister Norma Postlethwaite, and her many nieces and nephews.
