Norman K. White

March 6, 1937 — May 3, 2019

Indianapolis, IN

Norman Keith White often provided transportation home for fellow Christ Church Cathedral members after they finished their lunch at a local restaurant on Thursdays. Regularly on Saturdays Norman would make time for a drive to Noblesville for a visit with his widowed sister. He also took pleasure in shuttling his grandchildren from one place to another as they participated in various activities around the city. Norman’s last call came in his bed at St. Vincent’s Hospital on Friday, May 3, 2019 at age 82, after he told the nurse on duty he was going home. Quietly and without any fanfare— just the way Norman preferred, the time had come for him to journey home and join family and friends awaiting him in the garden of eternal peace.

The youngest of eight children born to Aleatha (Winburn) and Broda White on March 6, 1937, in Noblesville, Indiana, Norman embodied many of the important attributes possessed by his parents. Through faith, hard work and perseverance, they lovingly raised a tight knit family which included Doyle, Murphy, Kent Myron, Roland Lee, Maizie, Bobby, and Marcia. Norman’s parents and all siblings, except for Maizie Glover who resides in Noblesville, IN, preceded him in death.

In 1958, Norman graduated from Noblesville High School and shortly thereafter began working for the U.S. Post Office in Indianapolis. He married Geraldine Banks and that union was blessed with three children, Carla Dixon, Keith (Joyce) White, and Kelley (Tony) Humbles all of Indianapolis. In subsequent years he was employed in various capacities by the RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company, H&H Industries and Somer Dental Labs.

In 1961, Norman committed his life to Jesus Christ and became a member of Christ Church Cathedral in Indianapolis, IN. In his 58 years of membership, he served Christ Church as a member of the Vestry, as well as an Acolyte and Usher. Norman made several trips to Ecuador with his fellow church members to do important facilities improvement and humanitarian work at their sister parish, Cristo Liberador Episcopal Church in Quito, Ecuador. He was also involved in his community as an active early member of SCLC Operation Breadbasket in Indianapolis and more recently the Butler Tarkington Neighborhood Association. Proud of his family’s long Indiana heritage, he served on the Roberts Chapel Church and Burial Association Board of Directors for many years.

August 3, 1979, Norman married Marva June Buckner of Indianapolis. The couple celebrated nearly 40 blissful years of marriage and family life in Indianapolis. They exercised regularly by walking together through their Butler Tarkington neighborhood. Norman also enjoyed watching Butler Bulldogs and Indiana Pacers basketball, Indianapolis Colts football and professional golf tournaments.

A man of decorum, chivalry was never lost when one was in his company. He insisted on opening doors for others. Norman was peace loving, tranquil and soft spoken but a stickler for timeliness and organization. His optimism always conveyed a sense of positivity to those around him.

In addition to his wife, Marva, his children and his sister, Norman leaves to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy, stepdaughter, Gail (Wilson) Miller (Indianapolis, IN), grandchildren, Emmitt Johnson III (Indianapolis, IN), Everett Johnson (Las Vegas, NV), Whitney White (Dallas, TX), Alexis White (Dallas, TX), Antwaun Bigsbee (Indianapolis, IN), Aundray Bigsbee (Chicago, IL), Anthony Humbles, Jr. (Indianapolis, IN), Dion Miller (Indianapolis, IN), and Dominique Miller (Indianapolis, IN), 9 great grandchildren, first cousin Nora Fae White (Columbus, OH) and extended family member, Donald Glenn (Indianapolis, IN) along with numerous loving nieces, nephews, cousins, close friends and his church family.

Norman Keith White was cremated and a memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Christ Church Cathedral, 125 Monument Circle, Indianapolis, IN 46204.
