Dr. Norman C. Ashcraft, age 88, passed away July 25, 2019 at his home. He was born July 11, 1931 to Arthur and Verdelma Ashcraft in Arlington Heights, IN where he grew up and graduated from high school. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served as an airplane mechanic in England during the Korean War.
He attended the University of Illinois where he earned his B.S., Ed. M., and Ed.D. degrees. He taught in high schools in the suburbs of Chicago, developing occupational training programs. After receiving his Doctorate degree he became a charter faculty member and Technology Division chairman at Southwest Minnesota State College (now Southwest Minnesota State University). He later taught and led divisions at Central Michigan University and Southwest Michigan College.
In addition to his professional career, Norman was involved in many community church and service organizations throughout his lifetime. In recent years he enjoyed the Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple where he had participated in casino night fundraisers and playing Santa during the holidays. Norman’s legacy will continue for years to come with his organ donations to Alzheimer’s research, of which he was a study participant for over 20 years.
Norman is survived by: his wife Charlotte; daughter, Becky (Rich) Markley; stepsons, Tom (Paula) Riggin and Greg (Dana) Riggin; sister, Sedelia Ashcraft; 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: his first wife of 52 years, Jean Ashcraft and a sister, Valerie Zajac.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Legacy Fund of the Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple, Indianapolis, IN or to Southwest Minnesota State University Foundation in Marshall, MN.
