Norma Jean Wininger

May 26, 1934 — March 31, 2020

Indianapolis, IN

Norma Jean (McCracken) Wininger passed away on March 31, 2020 due to complications from COPD and congestive heart failure, illnesses she had fought for many years.

She was born on May 26th, 1934 to Floyd and Kathrine (Turney) McCracken in Paoli, Indiana. She lived and worked on the family farm near Log Creek and attended Ames Chapel Church and Paoli schools.

Around the age of 12, Norma’s mother died, and she describes the remainder of her childhood as very difficult. Near the end of her senior year, she left school and the farm behind to marry the love of her life, Leo D. Wininger. The young newlyweds soon moved to Indianapolis for work and to start a family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Stella; sisters, Blanche Plummer and Mabel Harrison; brothers, Glen, Clyde, Bob, and Gerald McCracken; and her husband, Leo Wininger.

She is survived by her three sons Dan (Diana) Wininger of McCordsville, Ron (Connie) Wininger of Greenwood, and Jeff Wininger of Florida as well as eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Jean, as she preferred to be called, was primarily a homemaker and a good wife and mother. She did work a few part-time jobs at various times in her life including Murphy’s in Fountain Square, Sears, and General Electric. She loved to talk and tell stories of her life, a McCracken trait inherited from her father.

Norma Jean Wininger’s character is best summed up by her attending nurse at the time of her passing: “She was a sweet lady and always considerate of others.”

In lieu of of flowers, the family would like to encourage family and friends to “Pass it on” during this difficult time.  Support businesses and purchase a gift card to a local restaurant and give it to a healthcare provider in your area in memory of Norma Jean.
