Norma Jean Wheeler, 73, of Indianapolis, passed away on Tuesday, May 16, 2017.
She was born on July 25, 1943 in Indianapolis to the late Walter Howard and Helen (Keiter) Wheeler. Norma was a 1962 graduate of Howe High School and a 1966 graduate of the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing. She worked the night shift as a Registered Nurse for over 35 years in the Community East Hospital Labor and Delivery Ward. Norma retired in 1998, but soon went back to work, again working nights, for Wildwood Healthcare Center from 2000-2004.
Besides nursing, her other passion in life was the Order of Eastern Star, having been a member for over 50 years. She served in various roles including Past District Deputy #11 in 2004-2005, past Grand Representative to Washington Grand Chapter in Indiana, Volunteer Nurse at Grand Chapter and was the current Worthy Matron Irvington Chapter 364. She also found time to crochet and needlepoint, and enjoyed doing puzzles. Norma was also a member of an exclusive club, The Norma Jean’s; a club for women who are named ‘Norma Jean’.
Norma is survived by her daughter, Mary (Brian) Stuart; brothers, Bill (Martha Ann) Wheeler and Don (Nancy) Wheeler; a niece and nephews and many close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Nancy Wheeler and David Wheeler.
A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2017 from 12-2pm at Flanner and Buchanan – Memorial Park, with an Eastern Star Service at 2pm. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Indiana Grand Chapter O.E.S. – Worthy Grand Patron’s Project.
