Nora Irene “Reenie” Horton, 87, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, October 10, 2020 surrounded by her loving family at her Indianapolis home. Reenie was born on March 12, 1933 in Kokomo, Indiana to Walter and Nora Belle Wolford. At the age of 15, her family moved into a new neighborhood and she fell smitten to the boy next door. After graduating from Shortridge High School, Reenie married that boy next door, Merle Horton, Jr. and celebrated 68 wonderful years as his wife and best friend. Over the years, Merle and Reenie developed a special code to express their love for each other. They would often give each other three kisses, or three hand squeezes if they were holding hands, and knew that meant “I Love You”.
When Reenie wasn’t busy with her full-time job as a homemaker, she enjoyed working with flowers in her garden, watching birds, listening to music—especially Big Band and Frank Sinatra—collecting clowns, anything with bows and watching classic movies. She enjoyed her vacations especially their annual visit to Florida, for the past 35 years, to celebrate their wedding anniversary.
Reenie is survived by her husband, Merle Horton, Jr.; her daughters Pam (Larry) Jensen and Judy Duke; her son Rick Horton; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren with a sixth on the way.
She is preceded in death by her parents; son Larry Horton; brother Walter “June” Kenneth Wolford; son-in-law, Larry Duke; step-father, William Johnson; and grandson-in-law, David Ritchie.
Services for Reenie will be held on Saturday, October 17, at Flanner Buchanan-Geist. Visitation will be from 10 a.m.–12 p.m. with her funeral service starting at 12 p.m. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
