Noël Helmink, a beloved educator and cherished friend to many, passed away on February 9, 2025, at IU West Hospital in Avon, Indiana. Born on September 14, 1943, in Durham, North Carolina, Noël lived a life filled with passion, laughter, and dedication. She graced the world with her presence for over eight decades, leaving behind a legacy that will be fondly remembered by her family, friends, and former students.

A proud graduate of Butler University, Noël earned her Bachelor of Science degree in 1965, later pursuing her Master's in Education and Science from Indiana University in Bloomington in 1970. Her thirst for knowledge remained evident throughout her life, highlighted by her graduation from the Teacher Leadership Academy in 1998. Noël spent 32 years teaching at Speedway Junior High, from 1967 to 1999, where she inspired countless students. Known for her incredible ability to connect with young minds, she taught beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes in duplicate bridge after her retirement, sharing her skills and passion with others.

Noël's personality was as vibrant as her dreams, which she often described in vivid detail. Her quick wit and engaging spirit were reminiscent of Carol Burnett, earning her love and respect from all who knew her. Noël was a born teacher, loved hard, and cherished deep connections. Many of her former students kept in touch with her throughout the years, a testament to the profound impact she had on their lives.

Noël was not only an exceptional communicator but also an excellent listener, making her a treasured confidante among friends and family. Married to her loving husband, Randy Helmink, she found happiness in their life together. Noël is also survived by her sisters, Jan LaFrance from Augusta, Georgia, and Carolyn Heckert from Athens, Georgia, her brother Jim Heckert, along with eleven nephews and nieces and numerous great nephews and nieces, who will carry forward her legacy of kindness and strength.

In addition to her career, Noël pursued various hobbies with enthusiasm. In her teens and twenties, she found joy in swimming and water skiing. As time went on, she developed a love for golf, sewing, knitting, and, of course, playing duplicate bridge—an area where she excelled and achieved the status of Diamond Life Master. Her competitive spirit resonated in every activity she took on, and her talent as an excellent seamstress was a source of pride for her and those around her.

Noël Helmink will be deeply missed, but her spirit will remain alive in the heart of every individual she touched. Her life was a tapestry woven with love, laughter, and an unwavering dedication to education and community. The memories of her vivaciousness and joyous laughter will forever linger in the minds of those fortunate enough to know her.
