With our shattered hearts we share this sad news. Nicolas Babic, 67, passed away suddenly on September 17, 2022. As we struggle to breathe and begin to comprehend life without Nic. Join us as we pause to remember and celebrate Nic. We are surrounded by love and lifted by the thoughts and prayers of all who loved him and love each of us. Nic was born in France June 8 ,1955 in France, where his parents Marija and Dusan Babic were reunited after years of separation and leaving their homeland Dalmatia, Yugoslavia, post World War II. In 1958, Nic’s parents, Dusan and Marija, along with his sister Andja and Nic immigrated to the United States to begin their new lives. Nic had three infant siblings that were born and passed during the war. Nic grew up in Gary, Indiana and graduated from Lew Wallace High School in 1974.
Nic is survived by his Sons and Daughters in Law; Daniel and Kristine; Kristopher and Amanda and grandson Nicolas; his sister Andja Dujakovic; former wife, Rhonda Babic; much loved nieces and nephew, many friends and loved ones and his beloved dog, “Major”
Nic started his work career in high school, like many in the area, he worked at US Steel for a time before joining the US Army in 1975. He was proud Army Veteran Honorably Discharged in 1978. During his time in the service he was promoted through the ranks to Sargent E5, served in the 6th Air Cavalry as a Motor pool, wheeled vehicle mechanic. He was awarded medals for sharpshooting and grenades. As Sargent, Nic was responsible for leadership and conduct of all men assigned to him. In 1978 he returned to Indiana, and US Steel until 1984 when he started his own trucking business, Hoosier Trucking. As owner operator he transported aggregate materials throughout Indiana. In 1996, Nic and Cheryl were married in Indianapolis and Nic began an new chapter in his career with Builder’s Concrete, Sagamore Ready Mix, SRM Ready Mix until his retirement 1 year ago. To say that Nic shined in his Ready Mix Career would be a disservice as he fully embraced and excelled in each role he took on. He was a master at creating and maintaining relationships. We all loved to watch him work– the ways he showed leadership and service to his company and customers was beyond admirable and truly inspiring. He was a connector, a builder of relationships and devoted to customer service. He made so many lasting and deep friendships through his work. He was well loved by co-workers and customers.
In 2009 Nic and Cheryl discovered sailing, bought their first sail boat and named it “Zivio” A Serbian Toast meaning “Here’s to Life” ! They spent countless summer weekends on the waters of Lake Monroe. If you have seen some of Nic’s pictures, you could easily see the joy they found together on the water. Nic was a devoted Father, the love he held for his sons, Dan and Kris, and the love his sons have for him is truly beyond measure. He was a the kind of father that guided with expectation, love and devotion to their wellbeing…always. Becoming a grandfather to Nico was the cherry on top of Nic’s precious life. Nico loved playing and laughing with his Deda and was his ”Little buddy”. Watching the two of them together wasone of our greatest joys
Nic was a member of St. Nicolas Serbian Orthodox Church, Indianapolis, IN. His faith and ours, will carry us through this most difficult of times as we will be supported by our brothers and sisters of St. Nicholas.
Nic was a “Good Man” many say. He was that and so much more. He exemplified how men of character live their lives. He loved deeply and lived fully. He will be missed in every breath we take and were truly blessed by his precious life.
