Nancy J. Allen Gossett Esque, 83, was born in LaPorte, Indiana, on July 24, 1939, to Raymond A. and Helena Catherine Allen. Her father was killed in World War II and was buried in Holland. She was three years old. She and her sister Linda were raised in LaPorte.
She and her family moved to Indianapolis in 1971. She worked factory jobs initially. Then she enrolled in Day Adult classes and obtained her high school diploma from Arsenal Technical High School. She and her daughter Kathryn were the school’s first mother daughter team graduates. When her children were grown, she returned to school and obtained an Associate Degree as a paralegal. She worked for a law firm downtown until she and her husband Scotty decided to move to Kentucky. Scotty became ill after only a few years in Kentucky, They returned to Indianapolis and Nancy took a job as the church secretary for Centenary Christian Church. When Scotty’s illness worsened, she retired and became his full-time caregiver. After he passed away, she served her community as a substitute teacher and volunteered at the library. Nancy loved to read. She sang in her church choirs and participated in Geology Club. In late 2021 Nancy developed throat cancer and underwent radiation and immunotherapy. Treatment was completed in May of 2022. She moved to Martinsville, Indiana, where she lived until her death on March 3, 2023.
She is survived by her 7 children, 24 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, a nephew, a niece, great-nephew, great-niece and many, many good friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jonah (Scotty) Esque, her son Craig Gossett, and her grandson Damon Gardner.
Funeral service will take place 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at Flanner Buchanan – Memorial Park, 9350 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46229 with burial to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will take place at the same location from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 13, 2023.
