Nellie "Jean" Wilkerson 86 of Mooresville, Indiana went home to be with Jesus on September 7, 2017. Jean was born on August 22, 1931 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Nellie Frances Wheeler and James Cook II who preceded her in death. She is survived by her four children: Colleen Wilkerson, Peggy (Ed) Roush, Dana Wilkerson, and Donald Wilkerson. Jean enjoyed spending her spare time doting on her grandchildren: Jon-Michael Delgadillo, Jamie (Joshua) Ziegler, Sarah Roush, and Evan, Cory, and Emily Wilkerson. Four brothers preceded her in death: James III, Edward, Chester, and Lester Cook. She'll also reunite with her first child, Michael E. Stovall. Jean worked for Service Master as Housekeeping Manager at St. Vincent Hospital for 20 years before retiring in 1996. Her favorite poem that guided her through life and spoke to her faith, “Footsteps”, is shared here in its entirety. The family would like to thank Meadow Lakes in Mooresville for their care and kindness during her last five years. We also ask that in lieu of flowers a donation be made to Relay For Life of Decatur Township, Indianapolis Indiana.
One night I dreamed a dream.
As I was walking along the beach with my Lord.
Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,
One belonging to me and one to my Lord.
After the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that at many times along the path of my life,
especially at the very lowest and saddest times,
there was only one set of footprints.
This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it.
"Lord, you said once I decided to follow you,
You'd walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life,
there was only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me."
He whispered, "My precious child, I love you and will never leave you
Never, ever, during your trials and testings.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you."
