Myrtle “Mickey” Lois Sheats – dearly loved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother – died on July 31, 2018. She was born on March 10, 1934, to Clyde and Florence Burton.
She retired from the Indiana Bell Telephone Company/AT&T after 35 years and then worked part-time at the Carmel Clay Library in the Children’s Department for another 25 years.
She leaves behind: her husband of nearly 65 years, Leonard Franklin Sheats; a daughter, Marshella “Shelly” (Stephen) Harkness, and a son, Frederick “Fred” Sheats; four grandchildren, Peter (Courtney) Vayo, Alexandria Sheats, Jill (Brian) McGinnis, and Keith Harkness; five great-grandchildren, Madison Toomey, Charlotte McGinnis, William McGinnis, Ayden Harkness, and Mason Harkness. She was preceded in death by her beloved grandson, Stuart Vayo.
Mickey never met a stranger. She was out-going, feisty, and caring. Her hobbies included knitting, quilting, and sewing. A huge Colts fan, she and Leonard obtained tickets in the first lottery, 1984, and her family still owns those four seats and attends all games. She took great care in making holiday family gatherings such as Christmas and Thanksgiving special. Mickey and Leonard were on the original founder’s committee for St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Carmel.
Friends and family may gather at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Carmel at 11:30 on Friday, August 3, 2018. A funeral service will follow at noon. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the church in her memory.
