It is with heavy hearts that we announce the loss of Myrtle V. (Burton) Caldwell, beloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, Great Aunt, and friend. At home, while surrounded by her children, she peacefully passed away on February 1, 2025, at the age of 84.
Born on June 1, 1940, in Nashville TN, Myrtle spoke of her youthful love for water skiing, which culminated in her becoming a member of the “Ski Bees”, a competition water ski group. Later, Myrtle brought Southern charm to the Midwest when she followed her parents to Indianapolis. While raising 3 children, Myrtle built a career at Federated Insurance and retired after 25 years. In retirement, she moved to the “Traditions at Solana” Community where Myrtle became a virtual ambassador and was widely known for her famous brownies.
Myrtle was a devoted mother to her three children and an extremely proud grandmother to her four grandchildren. Her family was her greatest joy, and she always made sure to celebrate milestones (often with her special white “angel cake” with warm liquid icing) and the little moments that brought them together, especially Thanksgiving, which she lived to host. Myrtle was also a loving sister. Her warm and generous spirit made her a cherished Aunt, a “Surrogate Grandma”, a “2nd Mom”, and friend to many.
Throughout life, Myrtle’s faith in God was strong and Jesus’ influence was evident in her compassion for others, especially “the least of these”. She had an incredible ability to brighten any room and lift the spirits of everyone she met. Myrtle always had a seat at her table for anyone who was hungry, regardless of their race, creed, or transgressions. Her unwavering kindness and gentle soul touched the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know her. In a word, Myrtle’s life was exemplary: the epitome of selflessness and forgiveness.
Myrtle is survived by her three children & their spouses: Teresa (& Robyn) Massey, Marvin Jr. (& Laurie) Massey, and Tabitha (& Scott) Marquez; four grandchildren: Whitney Massey, Spencer Massey, Isabella Marquez, and Gabi Marquez; three sisters & their spouses: Peggy (& Bud) Stidham, Connie (& Steve) Elston, and Pam (& Jeff) Isom; Sister-in-Law Mildred Burton; and 18 nieces & nephews (and their spouses & children): Vickie, Valerie, Karen, Rickey, Michael, Terry, Jeff, Tracey, John-Mark, Cyndi, Cortney, Harold, Amanda, Jesse, Joel, Leslie, Jonathon, and Allison. She has been reunited with family and friends who preceded her in death: her parents, Martha and Willie Hilton Burton; Siblings: Buford, Willie “Joe”, Nancy, and Dwayne; Niece and Nephews: Eyvonne, Timmy, and Brian; and dear friend, Jane. She will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved her.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate Myrtle’s life on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at a location to be determined.
