Indianapolis – Myron B. Garland, 83, of Indianapolis passed away on April 4, 2018, at Community North Hospital.
He was born November 10, 1934 in Beech Grove, Indiana to Homer and Ellen Garland.
Myron attended elementary school #54 and Arsenal Technical H. S. graduating in 1952. He played varsity basketball and was a member of the starting 5 when Tech went to the state finals in 1952 and lost the final game to Muncie Central. He played varsity baseball which became a career choice. When attending Butler University a scout from the St. Louis Cardinals farm team was in Indianapolis looking for players. Myron was offered a minor league contract as a pitcher and played two years in their Alabama/Florida league. He married Marilyn Moon, a 1951 graduate of Tech. They were married on September 27, 1953. After the two year baseball career, Myron was drafted and served two years with the U. S. Armed Services. Most of the two years were based in Germany. Myron then started a career with Hugh J. Baker & Co. as a draftsman for steel fabrication and commercial construction. The company sold to Farnsworth Steel and eventually closed its doors. Myron then accepted a position with Harmon Steel as project manager until his retirement in 1999. Myron loved his family as well as enjoyed his grandchildren, his yard along with golf and watching Purdue, Butler and Pacer basketball.
Myron is survived by his wife, Marilyn of 64 years, daughter, Cynthia Garland of Fishers, son, Bryan (Jennifer) Garland of Brownsburg and four grandchildren, Madison, Quentin, Pacie and Bryce Garland, sister in law Betty (Dan) McCoon and brother in law Larry Moon as well as two nieces, Lisa Davis and Erin (Ted) Jahanshahi and four great nieces and one great nephew. He was proceeded in death by both parents, brother, Melvyn Garland and son, Ronald Garland.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday April 14th at 12:00 noon at Old Bethel United Methodist Church, 7995 East 21st, Indianapolis with Pastor Bob McMillen officiating. Friends may call at Old Bethel one hour prior to service at 11:00a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Old Bethel United Methodist Church, American Cancer Society or American Heart Society. The family would like to thank Community Health for their outstanding care and compassion for Myron.
