Mrs. Julia Ann Poindexter Williams entered this earthly home on November 29, 1931 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Her parents were Clara and Julius Poindexter. She grew up with nine siblings and was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Clara Mable and brothers, Herman and William. Julia is survived by two brothers and three sisters who will dearly miss their older sister.
Julia was united in Holy Matrimony to Thomas C. Williams on August 1, 1953. This union was blessed with two children, Kevin Williams of Indianapolis and Joyce Smothers of Fort Worth, Texas. Thomas preceded Julia in death on July 20, 2008. Julia was a proud graduate of Crispus Attucks High School in 1949. She developed her love for flowers and decorating while working part-time at The Flower Hut, while her children were young. After they graduated high school Julia went to work at L.S.Ayres (now Macy’s) and retired from First Indiana Bank.
Julia was a life- long member of Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church and was active in the Sunday School, Lay Organization, and Women’s Missionary Society. Julia held the position of recording Secretary for the Lay Organization until her illness in 2015. She was a Sara Allen Torch lighter for the 4th Episcopal District of the Women’s Missionary Society for more than twenty-five years. Julia continued to help plan, decorate and raise funds for church events well into her eighties. She would mail extra church bulletins to former members that lived out-of-town to help them remain connected to the church. Her most cherished fellowship was with the group of ladies that lovingly referred to themselves as “The Gang.” She loved the many adventures the group took to see plays in Chicago, view fashion shows and dine at the best restaurants in town. Aside from the social activities the group participated in community service outreach and their fellowship provided the foundation for Christian based friendships that endured until her last day.
Julia looked forward to reading the latest news through the Indianapolis Recorder every Friday. She loved sports, especially the Indianapolis Colts and looked forward to attending the Circle City Classic every year. Julia was not shy and her smile was infectious. She made friends easily and was known for her outgoing spirit of caring and compassion that she extended to everyone. Julia will be remembered fondly by everyone who knew her. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, grandchildren, a host of relatives in the Poindexter and Williams families, church family and life-long friends.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Women's Missionary Society of Allen Chapel A.M.E Church or Heart to Heart Hospice in Julia Williams' memory.
