Monique Raymonde Hyde

December 18, 1931 — February 16, 2023

Indianapolis, IN

Monique Raymonde Hyde, age 91, passed peacefully in her sleep on Friday, February 16, 2023.  Born and raised in France, she moved to the United States in 1957 after marrying John Hyde, career professor of French at Indiana University, who preceded her in death.  The last surviving member of her biological family, she is especially remembered by her dear friends, Kathleen, Melissa, Martine, Sylvie and Antonio, who became her “family.”

After receiving her PhD in comparative literature from IU Bloomington, Monique taught at Butler University for almost thirty years.  In addition to teaching the French language and francophone literature, she created courses in film studies, commercial French and feminist theory and criticism.  She is remembered as being a demanding but highly effective educator.

Per Monique’s request, no funeral or public memorial service will be held.  As she devoted many years of her life to rescuing domestic cats and caring for feral felines, a fitting remembrance would be a donation made to IndyFeral.org.
