Mildred Irene Fortner Pendergast, 88, passed away February 28, 2018. Mildred was born May 25, 1929, in Rockville, Indiana. She spent most of her life in Terre Haute but moved to Zionsville in 2010. She had secondary residences in Leland, Michigan and Oriental, North Carolina.
She is survived by her children, Gail (Steve) Barrett, Janeen (Terry Pedersen), Mark (Paula), Christine (James) Rose and Alan (Ellen); 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and her siblings Gerry, Richard and Helen Fortner.
Mildred graduated from Rockville High School in 1947, and Indiana University in 1951 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and statistics. She worked for two years before marrying Overton (Bud) William Pendergast Jr. in 1953. Mildred devoted her life to raising five children and doing community service. She volunteered for years with the public schools, scouts, Election Board and Union Hospital, where she served for 25 years on the Board of Directors and as an officer of the Service League. In later years she crocheted many blankets for Project Linus. She had a passion for IU. Mildred loved traveling with her family, gardening, sewing, and music.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, her parents, John Earl Fortner and Ruby Helena Schneider Fortner, and five siblings.
