Michal Kim Howden, 71, died Friday July 7, 2023. Born May 18, 1952, in Vincennes, IN to Robert & Barbara (Caniff) Howden.
Michal moved to Zionsville in 7th grade and called it home ever since. A graduate of Hanover College, he met and married the love of his life, Betsy (Pottenger) in 1975. Michal was a lifelong dedicated educator with a passion for Social Studies. His career as a teacher spanned grade levels from kindergarten to college, with the majority of his teaching done in the Lawrence township system. After leaving the classroom Michal worked as a National Social Studies Consultant and author for several national textbook publishers. In retirement Michal continued his passion for early American history while authoring 5 books spanning from the colonial period to the Civil War. He also enjoyed hiking, cycling, gardening, cooking, and spending time with his family. As an avid Indiana University fan, where he earned his master’s degree, he loved all things IU and rarely missed a chance to cheer on the Hoosiers.
Michal is survived by his wife Betsy, children Christopher (Samantha), Alexandra (William) Ellison, and grandchildren Torrence, Graham, Winifred, Penelope, and Molly. He is also survived by his siblings Muff (David) Biber, Marc Howden, Mit (Scott Sanders) Howden, and multiple nieces & nephews and great-nieces & nephews. Michal was deeply loved by those around him and will be remembered for his intellect, wit, sense of humor, and big hearty laugh.
