Michael Anthony Laurenzano, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, died on October 8, 2021 from complications of pneumonia. He was born to Joseph and Marianna (Grosso) Laurenzano in Brooklyn, New York on October 16, 1944. He married Livia Cuocco on August 27, 1967. They raised their two children, Christopher and Leah in Indiana.
Michael graduated in 1967 from Saint John’s University in New York with a bachelor’s degree in biology intending a career in medicine. Acknowledging his great love of aviation, he instead chose to become a pilot. He joined the USAF, beginning his military career as an avionics maintenance officer. In 1970, he began air force pilot training and received his wings in May 1971. During the Vietnam War, Michael flew KC135 tankers. He was honorably separated from the USAF in 1979; he joined the Indiana Air National Guard retiring at the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1990. Afterwards Michael flew commercially for various regional airlines until 2001 at which time he became aviation safety inspector for the FAA, retiring in 2013.
Throughout his life, Michael remained a hard worker; he was never idle. Besides his love for all things related to airplanes (including building his own), he enjoyed traveling, working on his property with his “man toys,” and holding spirited discussions on the Constitution. Michael had a treasure trove of witty comments and jokes. But as funny as these jokes were, he delighted in the telling and re-telling of them more than the jokes themselves–and his listeners always responded with equal delight as if it were the first time they had heard it. He was a man of deep insight, always questioning the conventional wisdom. He loved his Catholic Faith and never missed an opportunity to educate others about it and encourage them to deepen their own. He prayed the rosary daily and devoutly attended Sunday Mass.
His funeral will take place on October 20, 2021 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 2310 Robertson Ave, Norwood, Ohio 45212. A Requiem Mass will begin at 10:45 a.m. preceded by viewing of the body at 9:30am and the praying of the Rosary at 10:20am. Burial will take place on October 21, 2021, 12:00 noon at Calvary Cemetery, 435 W. Troy Ave, Indianapolis, Indiana 46225. Michael is survived by his wife, Livia; his son, Christopher Lee Laurenzano; his daughter, Leah Anne Talley; his seven grandchildren, Aaron Michael Talley, Livia Angelina Talley, Madeline Grace Talley, Stephen Christopher Talley, Phillip Andrew Talley, Laura Kathryn Talley, and Paul Shay Marie Talley; his siblings, Joanne (Joseph) Igneri, Patricia Laurenzano, and Joseph (Jenny) Laurenzano.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations can be made to Hoosiers for Life, www.hoosiers4life, in Michael’s name.
