Michael A. Schaper, 71, passed away at home on Monday, November 18, 2019.  He was born on August 12, 1948 in Wolf Lake, IN as the youngest of 8 children to the late Harry and Bessie (Moore) Schaper.  Mike was a 1967 graduate of Dos Palos High School, California.

Following his graduation, he chose to enlist in the U.S. Army, eventually serving 3 tours of duty in Vietnam; 2 of which were in the Tet Offensive where he was a very successful marksman.  Some of his other military duties included heavy equipment mechanic and wireman.  Mike also spent 5 years in the Air Force.  During his time of service, he earned 3 Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star.  SSG Schaper retired from the U.S. Armed forces after serving a total of 33 years.

Following his honorable discharge, he worked as a semi-truck driver for several companies, eventually retiring in 2011 from Schuster Company.  Mike loved to fish, work on cars and watch the news.  He loved his time camping at Walnut Ridge Campground and cherished the friendships he made there.  Mike was an active member of the American Legion Post 267 and Lighthouse Baptist Church.  He could often be found enjoying breakfast at Bob Evans or Denny’s or relaxing at home with his dog and 5 cats.

Mike is survived by his loving wife of 13 years, Marjorie Schaper; children, Brian and Michelle; stepdaughter, Emily; and 3 grandchildren.  He is also survived by his siblings, Esther Donovan and Ted Schaper.  Mike was preceded in death by his parents; and 5 siblings.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2019 from 10am-12pm at Flanner Buchanan – Memorial Park with funeral services immediately following. Burial with military honors will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.  All veterans are invited and welcome to attend.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to the Disabled American Veterans.  Friends are invited to leave online condolences for the family at www.flannerbuchanan.com.
