Melvin Hugo Jones, 91, of Indianapolis, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2019, at Community Hospital East in Indianapolis. He was born Feb. 16, 1928, in Springfield, TN, the son of Will and Nina Groves Jones.
He and his bride, Betty E. Dorris, were married June 4, 1949, in Franklin, KY. She survives him. Melvin began his working life as a farmer, then worked as a mechanic for: Red Cab, Mayflower Moving Co., and Yellow Freight respectively. He was an avid fisherman, always ready to catch “the big one” well into his 80s. He was always looking for something to do. He enjoyed working on cars and tinkering with motors of all types. He was a wiz with engines. You could tell him your car was making a sound like “BEHXUWHDSHSHSSS” and not only would he immediately know what was wrong, he would tell you to bring the car over to fix it. He also enjoyed working in the yard, mowing and gardening. He loved watching Looney Tunes cartoons, but most of all, he loved his family and was always willing to lend a hand – moving, fixing up a house, picking you up at the airport (even if that meant driving to St. Louis.), etc.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Nancy E. Dawson (Randy), of Indianapolis, Sandra D. Imel (Dave), of Minneola, FL, and Melvin D. Jones (Kelly), of Anderson. Six grandchildren: Liana Shelton (Todd), Michael Imel (Crystal), Robert Jones (Amy), Melissa Treadway (Justin), Carissa Imel (William Streeper III) and Brandon Jones. Great-Grandchildren: Jenalee Wooldridge (Mark), Cody McClintock, Kaitlyn and Jonathan Jones, and Anna and Lily Imel and Nikolas Christie; Great-Great-Grandchildren: Peyton McClintock, Jackson, Landon, Mason and Steven Wooldridge; brother, Jerry Jones of Indianapolis, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Boyd.
