Melvin Breeden

November 22, 1944 — February 12, 2025

Melvin Breeden, 80, passed away on February 12, 2025. He was born in Indianapolis on November 22, 1944.

A proud Army veteran, Melvin served from 1963 to 1966, honoring his country with dedication and courage. His commitment to service shaped his character and was a source of pride for his family and friends.

He retired after many dedicated years of service from Allison’s Transmissions and Rolls Royce.

Melvin’s love for the outdoors was evident in his many hobbies. He was an avid boater and fisherman, spending countless hours on the water, enjoying the serenity and thrill of both. Riding motorcycles was another passion, and Melvin could often be found cruising the open roads with a smile on his face.

He especially loved planting a vegetable garden every summer, filling his home with the bounty of fresh produce. Wherever Melvin lived, he always made sure to plant fruit trees—pear, apple, or cherry—creating lasting memories with each harvest and sharing the fruits of his labor with those he loved.

In addition to his outdoor pursuits, Melvin was known for his competitive spirit and love of games. He was a skilled player of penny poker, as well as card games like Euchre and 5 Crowns, and he cherished the time spent around the table with his family and friends. His sense of humor, laughter, and gentle nature will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Melvin was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend. He was deeply devoted to his family. He will be remembered for his warmth, kindness, and the joy he brought to those around him. His legacy of love will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Bernice Breeden; his half-brother, Harold Breeden (Norma); his son, Jason Breeden, the love of his life and mother of his children, Mary Breeden; and a later life partner, Sonja Harris-Lucy.

He is survived by his loving children, Angela Hufford (Curt), Shannon Shearer (Rick), and Dawn Haggard (Darren); his bonus daughter, Michelle Marion; his grandchildren, Justin Breeden, Krista Baker, Jessica Breeden, Joshua Breeden, Christian Breeden, Logan Shearer, Nick Shearer, Jonny Haggard, James Haggard, and Jason Fox; his 11 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Daniel Breeden (Paula); as well as many cousins, extended family members and friends.
