Mayzelle G. Brooks, 94, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away July 26, 2020. She was born May 17, 1926 in Portland, Tennessee to Ollie and Valley May Gray.
Mayzelle moved to Indiana in her late teens for a job opportunity at a local glass factory. She then worked for IPS schools for over 15 years as a lunch lady for School #50. She loved to paint ceramics, doing crafts, and going to yard sales. She was a Christian woman who loved her family fiercely and did whatever she had to do ensure they had everything they needed; there was no obstacle Mayzelle couldn’t hurdle. Her passing leaves an empty space in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to meet “grandma” and will be incredibly missed.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Ollie and Valley May Gray; husbands, Don Brooks (2012) and Cordell Griggs (1969); daughter in law, Janice Griggs; grandchildren, Jason Griggs and Kimberlee Scruggs. Surviving to cherish her memory are children, Kay McCurry, Gene Griggs, and Jim (Donna) Brooks; grandchildren, Kevin (Jodi) Griggs, Nico McCurry, Kirby Brooks, Elijah (Amberlie) Brooks; half-sister, Carolyn Sue; 7 loving great-grandchildren; many loving great-great grandchildren; as well as a host of extended family members and friends.
Services are private due to local restrictions. Please reach out to the family for additional details. She will be laid to rest at Floral Park Cemetery immediately following services. In lieu of flowers, family asks that donations be made in Mayzelle’s memory to the Diabetes Association.
