Mary Elizabeth Shumate, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at home, at the age of 96 on October 19, 2024, surrounded by her family. Born on April 8, 1928 in Kansas City Missouri, Mary lived a life full of love, kindness, and graciousness that touched everyone she met.
Mary was known for her unwavering spirit, sharp wit, and deep compassion for others. A strong-willed, determined, independent woman, she possessed a spine of steel and a heart of gold. She faced life’s challenges with quiet strength and grace, never raising her voice or expressing a cross word, yet always standing firm in her beliefs. Those who knew her admired her steadfast nature and gentle demeanor.
One of Mary’s favorite places to spend time was PrimeLife Enrichment, Inc. in Carmel. She found great joy there, making greeting cards, playing Bingo, and attending exercise classes. But what she loved most was her “job” facilitating Coffee and Conversation every Thursday. Mary’s welcoming smile and easy good humor brightened the days of all who attended. Members affectionately called her "Sweet Mary," a reflection of the warmth and kindness she brought to everyone around her.
In the last few months of her life, Mary found special joy in simple pleasures, particularly her love of coffee. Every morning, she would take a sip and declare with a smile, "This is the best cup of coffee I have ever had." It was a reminder of her ability to find delight in the ordinary and savor each moment.
Mary’s faith was a guiding light in her life, and she is now welcomed into heaven by her sisters, brothers, and many beloved family members who have gone before her. The heavenly reunion with her loved ones brings comfort to those she leaves behind.
She is survived by her three loving daughters: Bonnie (Ken) Reagan, Claudia (Dino) Batalis, and Debbie (Bruce) Johnson. Mary also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Elizabeth (David), Garry (Jennifer), Lauren, Evan (Kaley), Nicole, Christopher, and her great-grandchildren: John, Sophia, Avery, and Reagan. Her family will carry forward her memory, love, and wisdom.
A Memorial Gathering in honor of Mary’s life will be held at Flanner Buchanan-Oaklawn Memorial Gardens on Friday, October 25th from 2-4pm. A Private Celebration of Mary's Life will be held following. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Indiana Canine Assistant Network - ICAN or PrimeLife Enrichment, causes close to Mary's heart.
Mary’s favorite quote that she carried in her purse was Ralph Waldo Emerson, What is success? To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate the beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded!”
Mary Shumate will be remembered as a beacon of love and strength, a woman whose life was a testament to the power of kindness, quiet determination, and grace. May she rest in peace.
