Mary Lienert, 94, died April 11, 2017. She was born in Indianapolis to John and Amelia Smyrnis. After graduating from Shortridge High School, she attended the Herron School of Art and a business school, which fostered her talents as a modern impressionistic artist and as Indianapolis Mayor Phillip Bayt’s secretary. She was married to Walter J. Lienert after being introduced to him by the mayor. For 23 years, she and her husband founded and ran Lienert’s Gym Camp. Mary also illustrated her husband’s book, The Modern Girl Gymnast on the Uneven Parallel Bars. She was a devout member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Preceded in death by her son, Kurt Lienert, husband, Walter Lienert, sister, Tula (Smyrnis) Vavul, and brother, Leonard Smyrnis, she is survived by her son, Kris Lienert, nieces and grand-nephews, and a dear friend Terry Corcoran. On Saturday, April 15 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, visitation will be held at noon followed by the 1:00 funeral service. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Burial: Crown Hill Cemetery. Flanner and Buchanan-Broad Ripple handling arrangements.
