Mary Judith "Judy" (Bayse) Murphy

Mary Judith “Judy” (Bayse) Murphy, 91, passed away on April 23^rd joining her beloved husband of 65 years on the anniversary of his birthday. Judy was born July 14, 1930 in Newton, Iowa to August and Louella Bayse. She moved to Indianapolis in 1940 and graduated from Arsenal Technical High School. Education was very important to her, and she attended Indiana University extension in Indianapolis while working jobs at Bobbs Merrill Publishing and Coca-Cola Company. She transferred down to IU Bloomington joining Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. Judy graduated from IU with a BA in education in 1952 and started her 38-year career with Indianapolis Public Schools at including time at Schools 68, 53, 113 and 20. While teaching full-time and being the mother of two daughters she studied at the University of Colorado in Boulder, University of Edinburgh, and completed her Masters at IU, followed a few years later with a J.D. from the McKinney School of Law at IU. She taught during the day and practiced law part-time at night and during the summer. After retiring from IPS, Judy worked for the U.S. Army, Department of Training & Doctrine at Fort Harrison instructing officers how to teach. Judy enjoyed reading cozy British murder mysteries, having high tea, and travel, visiting all fifty states as well as dozens of foreign countries, she particularly enjoyed cruising. She was preceded in death by her husband Wesley J. Murphy, sisters Barbara Perry, Carole Mannan. She is survived by her two daughters Cheryl Bovee (Michael), Miriam Murphy (Terry Prall); granddaughters Laura Bukovics (Andrew), Michelle Pomeroy (Andrew) and two great-granddaughters Kaylee Bukovics and Noelle Bukovics. Memorial gathering will be held Saturday, May 7th from 10am to 12pm at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East. The memorial service will begin at noon.
