Mary Jill Phillips

Mary Jill Phillips (Jill) passed away peacefully on May 25, 2022, in Carmel, Indiana. Jill was born on March 14, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan. She is preceded in death by her parents, Edgar Wade and Virginia Wade; her husband, Dr. Joseph Phillips; her ex-husband, David Beatty; and her stepson-in-law, Brian Hale.

She is survived by her children, Steve (Mary Twine) Beatty, Susan (Dan) Le Vay, John (Annette) Beatty; her stepchildren, Amber (John Baumgart) Gerke, Kristin Hale, Ben (Bridgette) Phillips; her sister, Barbara Johnson; brother, Jack (Cathey) Wade; grandchildren, James Le Vay, Jonathan Le Vay, Jamie Beatty; and step-grandchildren, Jordan Jackson, Cory Jackson, Ryan (Andi) Cox, Zachary Gerke, Drew Gerke, Piper Hale, Atticus Hale, Jessica Phillips, Kyle Phillips, Oliver Phillips; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

While raising her family, Jill became a Registered Nurse and devoted her career to working in Emergency Medicine, becoming the Coordinator of Support Services, Emergency Medicine and Trauma Center at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.  She also earned her bachelor’s degree in Science of Management from Wesleyan University in 1991, an associate’s degree in Nursing from Purdue University, Fort Wayne in 1971 along with many medical certificates.

Jill loved to travel and visited many countries in Europe and Africa, China, Australia, New Zealand, and the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador.  During her retirement, Jill generously volunteered time as the inaugural Board President of The Independence Academy of Indiana, a school she helped launch to serve two of her grandsons and other students with autism.  She also loved golfing, reading, and spending time with friends and family, including her beloved dog, Teddy.  She maintained an active interest in current events, technology, music, and the natural world.

Over the last four years, Jill lived at Sunrise on Old Meridian in the Memory Care unit, where she expressed her wonderful sense of humor. Her family is grateful for the care she received in her final years at Sunrise.

A memorial service to honor Jill will be held at Flanner Buchanan, 325 E. Carmel Dr. Carmel, IN, on Saturday, July 9, 2022.
