MARY HEWELL THOMPSON was born on March 13, 1939 in Cadiz, Kentucky to parents, Elliot and Robbie Mayes. She was the eleventh child in a loving family of thirteen children. Mary was educated through the Cadiz, Kentucky Public School System. In 1956, she relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana.
Mary was joined in holy matrimony to the love of her life, Thomas Thompson, on May 28, 1957. To this blessed union, three beautiful children were born, Barbara, Amos and Tony. Mary and Thomas were a devoted and caring couple who always strived for what was best for their family. This year, they would have celebrated their 64th year anniversary. They were definitely a “match made in heaven”!
Mary truly loved the Lord and accepted Christ at an early age. In 1963, she became a member of New Light Missionary Baptist Church in Indianapolis, Indiana where she remained a faithful member for over 58 years. Mary served on the Usher Board for 48 years and was also a dedicated Sunday School teacher for 28 years. Mary’s heart truly laid with the Lord.
Mary was a hard worker, in addition to caring for her family, she worked diligently as a press operator for RCA for over 34 years. In her spare time, Mary loved to garden and go fishing. She enjoyed feeding her neighbors with the fresh produce that she would grow in her garden with pride.
Anyone who knew Mary, knew that she would light up a room just by entering it! Those who wholeheartedly knew Mary well, often referred to her as “Queen.” Mary thrived on honesty and respectfulness. She was a devoted wife, an excellent and strong mother, and a friend who would stick with you through thick and thin. She will be dearly missed by all those she loved and those who loved her in return.
Mary Hewell Thompson departed this life on March 17, 2021 at the age of 82 years old. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and three sisters.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Thomas Thompson; her three children, Barbara Griggs, Amos Thompson, and Tony Thompson; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five siblings and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends, all of whom she dearly treasured.
