Mary Helen Whitmoyer was surrounded by her loved ones and went peacefully to be with her Savior on Wednesday April 27, 2022 at the age of 90.
Mary was born to Clyde Williams and Vera Carpenter-Williams on December 1, 1931 in Athens, Alabama. Her family moved to Indiana in 1937. She graduated from Arsenal Technical High School. She worked at Firestone, Allied Truck Equipment, and John Kirk Furniture as a bookkeeper, and was also an in-home childcare provider for two decades. She was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and Eastern Star.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was a devoted and caring wife to her late husband John Levi Whitmoyer and also his primary caregiver when he became partially paralyzed after a bout with polio. Mary lost her husband in a tragic automobile accident in 1965. As a single mother she took sole responsibility of working full-time to raise and support their four wonderful children.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Lucielle Harvey, Elizabeth Sandhoff, and Cecil, Tony, Charles, and Joseph Williams. She is survived by siblings Pete and Shirley Williams and by her children: John Whitmoyer, Jill (husband James) St. John, Carol (husband Robert) Flynn, and Pamela (husband Michael) Swinford. She is also survived by her eleven grandchildren: Eric Hedegard, Kristina Harris, Lesley Ziats, Suzanne St. John, Aaron Hedegard, Brandon Flynn, Eliza Whitmoyer, Mary Flynn, John Flynn, Mariah Whitmoyer, and Amelia Whitmoyer; and ten great-grandchildren.
Mary overcame many challenges in her life including cancer and multiple surgeries. She proved time and time again that there was no mountain too high for her to climb as she struggled against multiple illnesses in her final years. She whole-heartedly lived by the philosophy that God would never give her anything He did not think she could handle.
Mary loved to travel, and she loved the holidays. She was happiest when making memories with her family and friends. She loved visits from her family and was thrilled by video calls from her youngest great-grandchild Naomi. We will miss her, but we will let her go, for this life is simply a journey that we all take, a step on the path to our eternal home.
There will be a memorial service at Carmel Flanner Buchanan, June 25th, 12:00 to 2:00pm.
