Mary Florence Mchaffie

January 1, 1924 — November 29, 2020

Carmel, Indiana

On the morning of November 29, 2020 Mary Florence McHaffie peacefully passed away during a deep slumber at the age of 96. A proud resident of Carmel, Indiana for the majority of her life, Mary Florence was born on January 1, 1924 in Morton, Indiana to the late Leon and Edith (Bell) Miller as the middle child of five.

Mary Florence graduated from Morton High School (?) with a perfect attendance record. She then progressed to Central Normal College, a prestigious teaching college during its time, with a scholarship. Much like her educational dedication, Mary Florence was a dedicated member of Orchard Park Presbyterian Church for the last 50+ years and served as an elder, was in the Presbyterian Women’s Organization and founding member of the Stephen’s Ministers at Orchard Park. She was also a proud, pin carrying member of the PEO sorority. She was also a member of Woodland Country Club.

After 35 years of separation, Mary Florence will join her beloved husband Robert E. McHaffie, an attorney for Mayflower Transit Co. She was also proceeded in death by her sisters Eleanor “Nory” Clemmons, Margert “Peggy” Sibley, Betty Sadowsky and her brother Leon H. “Gus” Miller. Succeeded by her three children: Joan (Tom) Jackson, Tom (Amy) McHaffie and Amy (Tony) Mansfield and her 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

As a diligent homemaker, Mary Florence’s family was of the utmost importance to her. She is described as loving, warm, and wonderful by her family and loved ones. She has held titles of best wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, daughter, and friend. Her other passions included: detailed needle point, knitting, sewing, bridge, golf, and a dedicated faith and love for God. It should also be noted how she would light up around babies and enjoyed beating her grandchildren in board games, from her extensive collection. She was always a shoulder to cry on, an empathetic ear to listen and told you exactly what she thought when she knew that’s what you needed. Her memory will be cherished by friends and family along with her sharp wit and sweet nature.

Succeeded by her three children: Joan (Tom) Jackson, Tom (Amy) McHaffie and Amy (Tony) Mansfield. She was known to her family as Mary, her friends as Florence, and Momu to her 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Thursday, December 3, from 12-2pm, a service in her memory will follow at 2pm at Flanner & Buchanan. Mary Florence will be laid to rest at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please make donations to PEO Scholarships or Orchard Park Presbyterian Church.
