Obituary for Mary F. Rutledge

Mary Frances Rutledge, born February 19, 1933, beloved daughter of Josef and Caroline Merz, beloved wife of John, passed away in her home in Indianapolis, Indiana on March 9, 2023. A lifelong Indianapolis resident, Mary was strong in her love for her family and her Catholic faith.

Mary attended Assumption Catholic Church and graduated from St. Mary Academy. She worked at Indiana National Bank, then devoted her life to being a loving wife and mother. She enjoyed music (especially Tom Jones and Frank Sinatra), gardening, movies, chocolate and being sweetly stubborn.

She is survived by sister Joann Coffin, her son Stephen (Kathryn), daughter Kathleen Crecelius (Tom), and her grandchildren Claire Rutledge (Shahab Sakha), and Nickolas Crecelius.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents Josef and Caroline Merz (Windisch), sister Gertrude Nutgrass (Edward), and her loving husband John W. Rutledge.

Mary’s family would like to very gratefully thank and acknowledge Hosanna Home Helpers and Heartland Hospice. Mary’s last years were made greatly sweeter, and Mary was blessed, by their professional work and thoughtful assistance.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, from 4-7 pm at Flanner Buchanan-Washington Park North, 2706 Kessler Blvd West Drive Indianapolis, IN 46228. The rosary will be prayed that evening beginning at 6:30. Her funeral Mass will follow Thursday, March 16 at St. Michael’s Church, 3354 W. 30th Street, Indianapolis, IN at 10:30 am. Entombment will be at Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Michael the Archangel Church, 3354 W. 30th, Indianapolis, IN 46222.
