Martha Pearl Hammons

June 26, 1934 — January 20, 2024

Avon, Indiana

Martha Pearl (Martin) Hammons 89, formerly of Clayton, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday evening, January 20, 2024.  Martha was a member of the Upper Room Church, in Mooresville, Indiana.  She was born in Portersburg, Kentucky on June 26, 1934, to Elbert and China (Owens) Martin.  She was married to the only man she ever loved, Delbert Hammons, on July 29, 1950.   She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her siblings, Homer Martin and Joyce Martin Bailey, and Sharon Martin; son-in-law Mike Borden; and great-grandson Bentley Hammons.  She is survived by four daughters and three sons; Diana Borden, Brownsburg; Phyllis (David) Oliver, Indianapolis; Wayne (Joyce) Hammons, Clarksville, TN; Keith (Jenny) Hammons, Greenwood; Teresa (Jim) Donohue, Danville; Becky (Doug) Collier, Danville; and Tim (Monica) Hammons, Indianapolis; 21 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by her siblings, Mona Jean Hicks and Harold (Louise) Martin, London, KY, and Sanford (Siggi) Martin, Germany; two sisters-in-law, Marlene Riggs and Anne Riggs of London, KY, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Martha had one of the hardest jobs anyone could have, being a stay-at-home mom to seven children and the wife of a farmer.  Her kitchen was always open, and everyone was welcome at the table.  She spent many years teaching children in Sunday School and volunteering in the church nursery where she shared her love of Jesus with generations of children.  Others considered her hobbies to be chores: cooking, cleaning the house, laundry, canning and preserving vegetables from the garden and watching children.  She loved going to see anything her grandkids participated in whether it was a sports game, a music concert, or a theater production.  She was an inspiration to many, and she pushed through even when she was tired or plagued with serious health conditions.  She showed strength, compassion, and love and was a testament to a life lived for God.

Services will be held at Flanner Buchanan Decatur Township, 5463 Kentucky Ave., Indianapolis, Indiana with the Reverend Dirk Shaw officiating.  Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 25th with an additional visitation hour before the services at 1:00 p.m. on Friday the 26th, and interment at the Maple Hill Cemetery, Plainfield, Indiana.
