Mark Roger Kreger, 76, of Indianapolis, passed away on June 23, 2024. He was born in Waterloo, Iowa on August 27, 1947, to the late Roger Kreger and Eloise Kampovsky. Mark is survived by his dear love of 22 years, Marilyn Rhoades; his sister, Shelley Hall; children, Stacy & Seth Kreger; grandchildren Stella & Noah Kreger; stepdaughter, Tammy Dahlvang; and step grandchildren, James & Nate Dahlvang.
An accomplished engineer, Mark designed pistons at Ertel Manufacturing Co. for many years. Upon Ertel’s closing, he sold roofs and gutter guards, and started his own handyman business for several years. He then owned and expanded a boat propeller repair shop now called Indy Props. He took great satisfaction helping customers troubleshoot their boats to find the perfect prop.
His lifelong love of the river began by his going door to door searching for an owner willing to sell, which he finally found on 77th Street. Channeling learned skills from his grandparents and parents, he renovated and redesigned a total of three homes there. He was the best ambassador White River and Indiana could ask for-always going out of his way to share the highlights. One never went to Mark’s house in the summer without enjoying a boat ride or fried chicken at the White River Yacht Club.
He loved a good road trip on his motorcycle with no particular destination. He was a master of discovering roads less travelled and found joy in little mundane things. If he came to visit he would repair anything you hinted at or blatantly pointed out. He loved to travel when work allowed and made it to the Caribbean, Russia & several Baltic States (for his kids’ ice hockey), Australia, New Zealand and numerous countries in Europe. He knew no strangers and was always happy to share a beer or two.
He was a loving father devoted to the upbringing of his children and grandchildren. He was at every soccer and hockey game; taught them how to swim and catch fish off the dock; and was always ready to support them in every endeavor.
He loved animals, especially his dogs, Holly, Dixie, Lyra and Opie; and several cats (one of which he jokingly nicknamed “Fish Bait”).
His optimism for life was contagious, and he will be fondly remembered by anyone who was lucky enough to have known him.
A lifelong freemason and proud supporter of The Masonic Society he supported events and helped raise money for children’s hospitals annually. In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation in Mark’s name to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
A Celebration of Life will be held at The White River Yacht Club on Aug 18, 2024, from 4-8 PM. All are welcome.
