Mark Emmet Foster

April 5, 1953 — June 4, 2024

Indianapolis

Mark Emmet Foster was born on Easter Sunday, April 5, 1953, to William and Mary Emmet Foster in Schenectady, NY. Mark was the second of five sons. At the very young age of 5, he declared to his mother that he was the “King of Art”. He wholeheartedly believed that until the day he passed away. His budding artistic talent led him to a successful career as a Graphic Designer after completing his formal education with a BA & MFA degree in Fine Arts at Rochester Institute of Technology, Communications Design and a NY AAS degree in Advertising and Design, MVCC, Utica, NY.

He created many corporate logos that have stood the test of time. From Himont, USA, Inc in Wilmington, DE to his Kindred Collages in Indianapolis, he had a prolific portfolio of art and design.

Mark also taught early on in his career. He was an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design, at Indianapolis Heron School of Art; Visiting Assistant Professor of Graphic Design, Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY; Assistant Professor of Communication Design, University of Washington School of Art, Seattle, WA and Adjunct Faculty member, Department of Visual Communications, School of Art at Kutztown University, PA. After retiring, he taught in the Indianapolis Archdiocese specifically at Roncalli and Scecina High Schools. In addition, he worked part-time at the Garfield Branch of the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library.

He was an excellent photographer and used his photographs to create beautiful collages and works of art. His photos and collages graced the walls of many organizations and homes. His love of nature took him to areas around the city, but his special love was Garfield Park and the children’s garden located there. His beautiful images of butterflies and birds have been featured in exhibitions at various galleries and the parks art contests.

Those left to remember him are his loving companion of 13 ½ years, Donnae Longere-Dole and her family, Mark’s daughter Amanda Clark Foster of Harrisburg, PA; his four brothers, Tim (Ellen) of Florida and Montana, Frank (Chris), of NY, Robert (Kathy) of Minnesota and Michael (Nairye) of New Jersey. In addition, many nieces and nephews and cousins.

His memorial service will be held on September 14 at 3 pm in the Blake’s Childrens Garden at Garfield Park. In case of inclement weather, it will be moved to the classroom adjacent to the garden.

In lieu of flowers, a fund has been created to memorialize Mark’s never-ending dedication to Garfield Park through the “Friends of Garfield Park”. Click the link below to learn more and contribute to the Mark Emmet Foster Memorial Fund.
