Marjorie Rose Alexander

February 2, 1925 — May 5, 2019

Indianapolis, IN

Marjorie Rose (Harvey) Alexander, 94, a lifelong resident of Irvington in Indianapolis, went home to be with her Lord and loved ones on Sunday, May 5, 2019. She was born on February 2, 1925 in Indianapolis, IN to the late Sterling Morris and Rose (Hobbs) Harvey.

She was a 1943 graduate of Thomas Carr Howe High School. She married the love of her life, Robert Alexander on June 20, 1947 and they celebrated 62 years of marriage before his death in 2009. Marjorie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. All who knew her will surely miss her kind heart and quick wit.

She was very involved in the Irvington community including participation at her children’s schools, volunteering with the PTA for IPS #57 and #58, as well as Howe High School. She was a founding member of the Irvington Young Mother’s Club and served as a past Secretary of the Irvington Union of Clubs. She volunteered for 27 years to deliver Meals-On-Wheels. She also found time to help with the family business, Alexander Graphics.

Marjorie and Robert enjoyed traveling in their motor home. Their adventures took them around the entire perimeter of the US as well as Alaska. They flew to Hawaii.

Marjorie preferred having a full-house of children so as the older children left the nest, she and Robert enjoyed being hosts to several foreign exchange students. They loved entertaining family and friends.

Marjorie was a longtime member of Post Road Christian Church.

She is survived by her eight children, Cynthia McDonald (Steve), Julia Burcope (Joe Roush), Gregory (Anita), Ronald, Marcia Anderson (Dean), Andria Harrison (Matthew), Amy Welch (David), and William (Kim); 24 grandchildren and 23 (and counting) great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Harvey; husband, Robert J. Alexander; daughter-in-law, Gloria; and granddaughter-in-law, Donnelle Browning Alexander.

Visitation will be held on Friday, May 10, 2019 from 2-8pm at Flanner Buchanan – Memorial Park. Funeral services will take place Saturday morning at 11am at Post Road Christian Church, with additional visitation 1 hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Post Road Christian Church, the Irvington Historical Society, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
