Marilyn E. Shurtleff

July 24, 1939 — January 26, 2023

Greenfield, IN

Marilyn McCallip Shurtleff, 83, won the struggle against covid-19 and viral pneumonia in 2020 but lost the battle to cancer on January 26, 2023. She was the daughter of the late Margaret Louise McCallip and her beloved stepfather Clifton Durham.

Marilyn worked in various retail jobs, but her full-time employment was in professional accounts at Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. She retired July 1, 1999, and spent her uncounted volunteer hours doing bedding laundry for the cats at Rosie’s Southside Animal Shelter. She was a lover of animals- especially cats- yes, even big ones.

She married Roy Shurtleff in her grandiose fashion on September 25, 1982. Most summer weekends were spent on their pontoon boat in the Cordry-Sweetwater conservancy district. She also loved her vacations in Destin, Florida; Hilton Head, South Carolina; and Treasure Island, Florida. Vacations anywhere were O.K. too.

Her survivors include her devastated husband Roy, her sisters: Ruth Ann Dearth and Norma J. Kirchhofer; her brother, Stephen Mike Burham (Nancy); her brother-in-law, Don Montgomery; and her sister-in-law, Sandy Durham. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Jim, and her sister, Jane.

Funeral Services have been entrusted to Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East, 10722 E. Washington Street. Visitation will be held on Thursday, 2/2/2023, from 1pm to 2pm, with services beginning at 2pm.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Rosie’s Southside Animal Shelter in her name at 1614 W. Edgewood Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46217.
