Marie Haverstick of Indianapolis passed away on October 8, 2020. She was born on August 31, 1926 to Charles and Jennie Ruble in Greensburg, IN.
We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from Marie during her 94 years, among them: Whenever eating out at a restaurant, order the steak, never something you can make easily (and more cheaply) at home. Judge Judy is always right. Doctors and Kroger are always wrong. If you give someone a gift, also give them 10 small plastic bags to make storage of that gift easier. There’s not much that dental floss and wintergreen Certs can’t fix. White pearl nail polish really is the only nail color you need.
Marie claimed, as did many in her generation, that as a child she walked 5 miles to school one way. Her children, believing that she dramatized her struggle, did not believe her for years. Later, when they drove (not walked) the route, they were humbled to learn that she did go the distance. She walked 10 miles a day, rain or shine, to get an education.
Marie’s pie crust is infamous and her cheesecake better than any that NYC has to offer. She grew her own rhubarb for strawberry rhubarb pie, picked blackberries for stain pie, and served apple pie for breakfast.
She was a longtime member of the VFW and loved to put on her fancy clothes and bling to go dancing. She was only involved in one bar fight (that we know of).
Marie is remembered for her ability to look half her age while wearing no make-up and to accessorize any outfit with jewelry that you wish you owned (usually animal-themed like a jaguar with ruby eyes).
As an avid seamstress, she could design an entire suit from scratch or just alter some jeans to fit better than any jegging out there. She made clothes for everyone in her life and none of us knew how good we had it until we were forced to buy clothes at the store. Walmart is not for the long-legged or the short-waisted. Marie also became an expert quiltmaker later in life, and we are so thankful to be able to wrap up in them now.
Marie’s biggest love and pride was her family.
Her big heart & feistiness are carried on by her children, Donna Huffman and Gary Walters; her grandchildren, Emily Schwartz, Betsy Jo Walters, Angie Krasteva and Jessica Walters; her great grandchildren, Isabella Walters, Avi Mount, Kaloyan Krastev and Theodor Krastev; her favorite havanese, Graham.
Marie is preceded in death by her parents; her siblings Ellen Zurline, Marion Ruble, Arthur Ruble, Harold Ruble, Raymond Ruble and Edward Ruble; her first and funniest husband and father to her children, Albert Walters; her entertaining second husband, Eddie Boger; her third husband and soulmate, Walt Haverstick; her companion for over 20 years, Paul Lewis.
Our gratitude goes to the staff at Wesley Manor in Frankfort, IN, for caring for Marie in the last few years of her life. We appreciate your patience with her insistence on running the unit her way, and your sense of humor when she took it upon herself, at 93, to assist another patient onto the commode. Once a nurse’s aide, always a nurse’s aide.
Should family and friends wish to send a memorial, we suggest sending contributions to The Salvation Army.
Because of the pandemic, we have chosen a small, immediate family-only service at Flanner Buchanan—Washington Park East. There will be pie.
