Margaret Schricker Robbins, 101, beloved aunt who was long active in civic, community and church activities, died of natural causes on November 1. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Lewis Corwin Robbins and her two brothers Henry F. Schricker Jr. and George W. Schricker. She was the daughter of the two-term Indiana governor Henry F. Schricker and his wife, Maude.
Margaret was born in Knox, Indiana in 1916 and was graduated from Knox High School in 1934. She attended Indiana University where she was initiated into Kappa Kappa Gamma. She was graduated from Indiana University in 1938.
Her late husband, Lewis, was a physician with the U.S. Public Health Service, and his work took him and Margaret to live and work in several different cities in the United States and abroad, particularly in Asia in the early 1950’s. Based on these experiences, Margaret was hired by the U.S. State Department in Washington D.C. to work at the Agency for International Development in the Orientation Activities Branch where she prepared other American wives for living abroad.
Always active in the Democratic Party, Margaret assisted with her father’s campaigns for governor and participated with him in many state functions. One of her favorite assignments was certainly the christening of the battleship U.S.S. Indiana on November 28, 1941. For several years she attended reunions held by the ship’s crew members. The last reunion she attended was in 2001, 60 years after the ship’s christening. She was a longtime Democratic Ward Chairman in Marion County.
Margaret belonged to and had been an active member in several organizations including Broad Ripple Kiwanis, where she served as president; Broad Ripple United Methodist Church; Indiana Church Federation, P.E.O. Sisterhood and Kappa Kappa Gamma.
She is survived by nieces and nephew Christine Schricker Gallagher (Frank) and Kathryn Schricker Kish (John), Indianapolis; Mary Schricker Ecker (Don), Plymouth, IN; Susan Louise Schricker, South Bend, IN; Sara Schricker Klein (Jonathan), Park City, Utah; George William Schricker (Michelle), Plymouth, IN; sister-in-law Jean Schricker, Plymouth, IN and seven nieces and nephews of her late husband.
Visitation will be Tuesday, November 7, 2017 from Noon till 1 p.m. with services at 1 p.m. at Flanner Buchanan-Broad Ripple. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery.
