Margaret Jane Dick

June 18, 1920 — October 5, 2021

Indianapolis, IN

Margaret J. Dick died on Tuesday, October 5, 2021. She was born in Lawrenceburg, Indiana on June 18, 1920 to Theron Herbert and Mary Kassebaum Smashey. Margaret and her younger sister, Mary, spent their early childhood in Greendale, Indiana with brief periods in Indianapolis, Indiana and Beardstown, Illinois.

Margaret graduated from Beardstown High School in 1938 and then graduated with a degree in history, with honors, from the University of Illinois in 1942. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority and had very fond memories of her college years. Margaret met her future husband, Donald Dick, while in college. Margaret and Don were married on August 8, 1942 at Hamline Chapel of the Methodist Church in Lawrenceburg. After Don’s service in the U. S. Army Corp of Engineers during World War II, they settled in Indianapolis.

Margaret was a member of the Irvington Presbyterian Church (IPC) for over 70 years. She was an Elder in the church, served on the Board of Deacons and served the church in many ways during her long membership. She helped initiate a Bethel Bible Study series at IPC and, for nearly 25 years taught a weekly bible study that ended only due to the covid outbreak. She was also active in many civic and charitable organizations in Irvington and the greater Indianapolis area including building fund drives for Community Hospital, the Ransburg YMCA, and the Benton House restoration in Irvington.

Throughout her life, Margaret was an avid reader and a lifelong student of history, the Bible, literature and current events. She was a long-time supporter of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and was particularly fond of opera. Margaret enjoyed sports and, with her husband Don, enjoyed traveling, golf and were outstanding bridge players. Of all her many interests, none surpassed the love, dedication and support she gave to her family.

Margaret is survived by her children David Dick (Liz Slawson), John Dick (Tobi Weinstein), and Elizabeth Laslie (Jeff). She also survived by her 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
