Margaret Herd Layne, 93, died Wednesday, February 7, 2018 in Zionsville, Indiana. Margaret was born October 15, 1924 and was the daughter of Roy and Edna (Wilson) Herd in Cass County, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willliam J. Layne; her sister, Pauline Graham; and her brothers, Hale and Carl Herd. Margaret is survived by her two sons, William (Jolene) Layne of Speedway, Indiana and Jerry (Kathy) Layne of Carmel, Indiana. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Lauren Layne, William Layne, Tara Layne, and Tiffany Furman; and several nieces and nephews.
During her very full life, Margaret valued education, travel, reading, playing piano, and time spent with treasured family and friends. She was also a faithful member of Speedway Christian Church for many years. Margaret earned a B.S. Degree in 1944 from Purdue University and worked at an advertising firm in Chicago. In 1947, she married her husband Bill and started her teaching career at Oxford Public Schools. Later, she and Bill moved around the country with stops in Phoenix and Scott AFB Illinois, and finally Speedway. After her husband died in an F-84 fighter accident in 1959, Margaret went back to school and taught elementary education at Speedway Public Schools. Fulfilling a life-long goal to be a librarian, she returned to college in 1974 to earn a M.S. Degree in Library Science from Indiana University, and subsequently became librarian at Speedway High School, where she worked until she retired in 1990. In retirement, Margaret traveled extensively, making trips to Europe, Russia, and Africa. She wrote two books, documenting her family genealogy. After 50 years in Speedway, Margaret moved to Hoosier Village Retirement Home in 1999, where she continued a very active life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to a charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at Speedway Christian Church, 5110 W 14th St., on Monday, February 12, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Flanner Buchanan-Speedway.
